What Is an Ash Catcher?
Think of an ash catcher like a little guardian angel for your bong.
An ash catcher is a glass attachment that sits between your bowl and your bong base, right at the joint where your bowl would normally go. Its job is simple: catch ash, debris, and buildup before they reach the main chamber of your piece.
Instead of everything pulling straight into your base's water, the ash catcher acts as the first stop. It catches the mess early, which helps keep your bong cleaner for longer. Cleaning gets easier, too! Since most of the ash and gunk collects in the ash catcher, you can detach it, rinse it, soak it, and clean it separately instead of letting all that buildup settle into your base. Your bong will still need regular cleaning, but an ash catcher helps keep the nastiest part of the job more contained.

Wet vs. Dry Ash Catchers: What's the Difference?
Both wet and dry ash catchers help keep debris out of your bong, but they work a little differently.
Wet Ash Catchers
A wet ash catcher holds water, which adds an extra filtration stage to your setup. The water helps trap debris and cool the pull before it reaches the main chamber.

Dry Ash Catchers
A dry ash catcher does not use water!

For dry usage, the ash catcher's downstem would be removed and you'd have to size up for a larger bowl.
A dry setup contains just the ash catcher and a bowl.
For wet usage, the setup contains the ash catcher, a small downstem, and a bowl.
The water needs to be filled enough to cover the perc slits at the base of the ash catcher downstem.

Is Ice Safe to Use with an Ash Catcher?
When it comes to using ice, an ash catcher is actually your best friend for a safer, smoother experience.
While dropping ice into your bong's mouhthpiece creates an instant chill, hitting colder air can sometimes cause lung irritation or a "frosty" cough.
However, using an ash catcher makes ice much safer and more comfortable because it adds an extra stage of water filtration before the smoke ever hits the ice. This process pre-cools and, more importantly, hydrates the smoke. By the time the vapor reaches the ice cubes, it has enough moisture to prevent that harsh, dry-ice sting that leads to throat irritation.
