Prism 101
The Definitive Guide to Modular Water Pipes
Our goal is simple:
To provide a clear, functional understanding of how the Prism modular water pipe system works. With this info, you'll have everything you need to dial in your function, and create your ideal airflow configuration.
Whether you are a first-time owner or looking to expand your collection, this "101" modular bong guilde breakdown, will help you master the terminology, identify the key components of your pipe, and understand how our modular design translates into a better smoking experience. Because lets be honest, modular water pipes are superior to the standard water pipes.
Get to know your Setup: The "Single Stack"
While the Prism system allows for infinite customization, most setups begin with the single stack concept—which is the foundational configuration of our modular line. The single stack is also what bong users recognize as the standard bong shape with a base and a neck piece.
Below are the five essential parts to a single stack.
The Mouthpiece.
The mouthpiece is the uppermost glass section where you place your mouth, inhale, and the smoke gathers up in. As a modular piece, it can be swapped for different styles to change the height, angle, ergonomic feel, and cooling level of your hit. Prism currently has three different styles of mouthpieces.
The Halo Connector.
The Halo is the proprietary heart of the Prism system. These anodized aluminum rings utilize a plastic duel threaded interior with smoke-safe silicone gaskets between the two threads. This design creates a 100% airtight, waterproof seal, and prevents the connecting glass pieces to never touch. The threaded modular design also allows the pipe to be fully disassembled in seconds for travel or cleaning purposes.
The Base.
The base is the foundation of your pipe and its primary water reservoir. Available in various styles, the base dictates the overall water capacity, filtration style, and structural stability of your setup. Prism currently has five different styles of bases.
The Downstem.
The removable glass or metal tube that channels smoke from the bowl into the bong base. It provides the initial stage of filtration by creating bubbles (percolation) to cool the smoke due to slits at the bottom of the downstem tube.
Note: Some bases, like the Honeycomb, Klein Incycler, and the Percolated Beaker, use fixed-downstems and do not require a separate downstem.
The Bowl.
The starting airpath point to the bong and where your herbal material is held. Prism uses a standard 14mm joint size, making our setups compatible with a wide range of Prism glass and third-party accessories.
Expanding the Setup:
Performance Add-Ons
Because of Prism's modularity, your setup can evolve with endless possibilities. You can further refine your experience with these performance-driven modular add-ons that in include our percolators and ash catchers.
Ash Catchers:
An ash catcher is an external attachment that sits between your bowl and downstem. It traps debris before it enters the main base, keeping your water clean and providing an extra layer of cooling. What makes the Prism ash catcher unique is that it we designed it to function as both a wet ash catcher and a dry ash catcher. It features a removable downstem that sits inside the chamber, allowing users to switch between filtration styles.
When the downstem is installed, the chamber is filled with water. Smoke travels through the slits in the downstem and bubbles through the water, providing additional filtration, cooling, and smoother hits before entering the main piece. When the downstem is removed, the chamber is used without water, turning it into a dry ash catcher. In this mode, it catches ash and debris before they reach the bong while maintaining a more direct airflow and stronger flavor.
This dual-function ash catcher design lets users easily switch between extra filtration (wet) and dry ash catching, depending on their preferred smoking experience.
Beaker Ash Catchers
(14mm / 45° Angle)
The Go-To for Beakers & Straight Tubes Bases
The 14mm /45° beaker ash catcher is designed specifically for bongs with an angled joint. Because beakers and straight tubes typically sit at a diagonal, this 45° attachment ensures the ash catcher sits perfectly level. This prevents water from siphoning into your base and keeps the internal percolator submerged for maximum filtration.
Honeycomb Ash Catchers
(14mm / 90° Angle)
The Vertical: Honeycomb & Klein Bases
If your bong has a joint that points straight up toward the ceiling, you need a 90° ash catcher. Our 14mm / 90° ash catchers sit parallel to your piece, maintaining that sleek, upright look. It’s the essential choice for our more technical bases, ensuring the extra layer of diffusion works in perfect harmony with your existing percolators.
Modular Percolators:
In the Prism system, you aren't limited to the filtration built into your base. Our modular design allows you to "stack" additional glass percolator sections between your base and mouthpiece for as much filtration you want.
Tree Percolators
-
Standard Tree: Known as the quintessential "chugger." It features multiple vertical arms that pull smoke downward and break it into large, satisfying bubbles for classic filtration and a reliable cool-down.
-
Big Tree: The "more is more" version. By increasing the number of vertical arms, this powerhouse maximizes surface area, allowing for massive, ultra-filtered hits that don’t sacrifice that signature tree-perc sound.
Showerhead Percolators
-
Showerhead: Sleek and incredibly efficient. The showerhead percolator design uses a bell-shaped disc with fine slits to create a flurry of tiny bubbles, resulting in a very smooth, consistent, and quiet pull.
-
Big Showerhead: Built for those who like to move a lot of air. The Big Showerhead Percolator larger disc features even more slits, providing massive diffusion for high-volume bases while maintaining an effortless, low-drag experience.
Component Deep Dive:
Following the Airflow
Ever wonder why some bongs hit like a dream while others feel like you’re trying to suck a milkshake through a coffee stirrer?
It’s not magic—it’s called fluid dynamics.
Think of your bong as a high-performance engine. Every component—the bowl, the joint, the downstem, and the percolator—acts as a stage in a filtration assembly line. If one part is misaligned or poorly designed, the whole system stalls, leading to stale smoke and harsh "dragon breath."
The Intake: Bowls, Bangers, and Carb Caps
The journey begins at the intake of the bong. This area is designed for universal bowl and downstem compatibility and high-heat resistance.
-
The Standard 14mm Glass Bowl: Engineered as a cone to hold dried botanical material. It features a universal 14mm male joint, making it compatible with all Prism downstems and most third-party accessories.
-
The Quartz Banger: A specialized, high-heat resistant attachment used for vaporizing concentrates (dabs). Quartz is utilized for its superior thermal retention and durability under extreme temperatures.
-
The Carb Cap: A lid-like accessory placed over a heated quartz banger to restrict airflow and lower the internal pressure, allowing your concentrates to vaporize at a lower, more flavorful temperature.
Initial Filtration: The Downstem
Smoke travels from the intake into the Downstem, the removable glass tube that connects the bowl to the water base.
-
The Mechanical Function: As you inhale through the top of the bong, smoke is forced through the bottom of the downstem that is submerged in water.
-
The Precision Diffusion: Our downstems feature precision-cut slits that break smoke into thousands of micro-bubbles (atomization). This increases the total surface area, allowing the water to strip away heat more efficiently. Causing a smooth inhale for the user.
-
Standardization: Prism downstems utilize a 14mm female joint (to accept the bowl) and a 19mm male joint (to fit into the Prism base). We currently have a few different lengths along with glass and metal downstems.
The Foundation: The Base
The smoke then enters the Base, the primary water reservoir of your pipe. We offer five distinct styles to tune your filtration based on your likes.
-
Beaker Base: Iconic and stable; holds high water volume for superior cooling and a heavy "chug." Known as a "daily driver."
-
Straight Tube Base: Designed for a direct, fast-clearing hit with minimal airflow resistance.
-
Honeycomb Base: Features an integrated percolator disc that atomizes smoke into a fine "fizz" making for a very smooth filtered inhale. Note: No downstem required.
-
Collins Beaker (Percolated Bealer): A beaker with an internal "pyramid" cone with little slits around the pyramid base for filtrated and for refined, multi-directional diffusion. Known as Prism's smoothest base for inhales. Note: No downstem required.
-
Klein Incycler Base: The gold standard for flavor; uses a "recycling" loop to keep water and vapor in constant motion for maximum cooling. Optimized for concentrate use, but can be used for herb as well.
The Connection: The Halo Connector
As the smoke rises from the base toward the mouthpiece, it passes through the Halo Connector.
-
Duel Treaded Design: Utilizing a plastic duel threaded interior with a smoke-safe silicone gasket between the two connecting threads. All securely inside a metal ring, make for an extremely strong unbreakable bond between all pieces of modular glass.
-
Air and Water Tight: This design creates a 100% airtight, waterproof seal, and prevents the connecting glass pieces from ever touching. Because of the food-grade silicone gasket, smoke never touches the threaded plastic or metal on the exterior.
-
Modular Advantage: This hardware allows you to add Modular Percolators (like a Showerhead or Tree percolator) between the base and mouthpiece for additional stages of filtration and cooling.
-
Durability: In the event of an accident and a piece of glass breaking, the benefits of a modular system is you only need to replace the specific glass section the broke rather than the entire pipe.
The Final Gateway: The Mouthpiece
The Mouthpiece is the final stage of the airpath, engineered for comfort and temperature control.
Straight Mouthpieces: Both our Tall and Standard heights feature a built-in ice pinch. This allows you to stack ice cubes to chill the smoke while also acting as a splash guard to prevent water from reaching your mouth.
-
Classic Line: Features a triple ice pinch for maximum cooling.
-
MINI Line: Features a single ice pinch for a streamlined profile.
Bent Mouthpiece: Designed for ergonomic, "laid-back" comfort. This thinner angled mouthpiece is designed without an ice pinch, prioritizing posture and ease of use. (Currently available for Classic sizes only).
Your Setup, Your Way.
At the end of the day, the Prism system is all about moving away from "one-size-fits-all" glass and giving the control back to you.
By understanding how each piece functions—from the high-heat quartz banger at the start to the triple-pinch ice cooling at the finish—you’re no longer just buying a pipe; you’re calibrating an experience.
The best part?
Because of the Halo Connector, your setup is never "finished." You can evolve it over time by stacking a new percolator, slipping in an ash catcher, or swapping a beaker base for the flavor-focused Klein Incycler.
