What Are Decals?
Unlike standard surface-level graphics, kiln-fire glass decals are specialized transfers made with finely ground glass frits and metallic oxides (pigments) suspended in a screen-printed medium.
When applied to glass and fired in a kiln, the decorative layer undergoes a chemical fusion. As the temperature rises, the organic binders burn away, and the mineral pigments melt directly into the glass surface. This creates a permanent, food-safe, and scratch-resistant finish that cannot be achieved with traditional paints or vinyl.
How We Do It:
Substrate Cleaning:
Ensure the glass surface is meticulously cleaned with a lint-free cloth. Any fingerprint oils left behind can create "ghosting" or prevent the decal from fusing properly.
The Soak:
Submerge the decal in lukewarm distilled water for 30–60 seconds until the image slides easily off the paper backing.
Positioning and Squeegeeing: Once slid onto the glass, use a rubber squeegee or a soft damp cloth to push out every drop of water and every air bubble from the center outward.
The Drying Phase:
The decal must dry for at least 12 to 24 hours before firing. Any residual moisture trapped under the decal will turn to steam in the kiln, causing "blowouts" or pinholes in the design.
Controlled Annealing (Kiln Fire):
Once the decal has reached its peak fusion temperature, the kiln must undergo a controlled cooling process, or annealing. Rapid temperature drops can cause thermal shock or stress fractures in the glass. By slowing the cooling rate, you ensure that the glass and the newly fused decal stabilize together, resulting in a durable piece that is resistant to cracking and internal tension.
