How to Clean Your Bong:
A Simple Guide for Cleaner Sessions
There’s nothing like a fresh, clean bong, and a setup that actually looks as good as it should. And let’s be honest: we all know the smell of a rank bong full of old water. It’s 2026, we can do better.
Whether you clean your piece after every few sessions or only when things start looking a little bit sketchy, knowing how to clean your bong properly makes a big difference.
At Prism, we designed our pieces to come apart, which makes cleaning way less intimidating. Instead of trying to shake cleaner through one giant piece of glass, you can separate your base, mouthpiece, bowl, downstem, and percolator, so every part gets the attention it needs.
Why and How Often Should You Clean Your Bong?
A clean bong means better flavor, smoother pulls, clearer glass, and less buildup. Old water, ash, and resin can make your piece smell stale, look cloudy, and feel harder to pull from.
Change your water often, rinse regularly, and deep clean when you notice buildup, odor, cloudy glass, or restricted airflow. If you use your piece daily, a weekly deep clean is a good habit.

What You Will Need to Clean Your Bong:

A glass cleaning solution (isopropyl alcohol, Formula 420, or any of your preferred glass-safe cleaner)

Coarse salt (unless your cleaner already contains an abrasive)

Step 1: Disconnect Your Piece
Start by carefully taking your Prism setup apart. Remove the mouthpiece, base, bowl, downstem, and any percolators, ash catchers, or other add-ons.
This is where Prism’s modular design makes cleaning easier. Because each section twists apart, you do not have to force cleaner through every chamber at once. You can clean the base, mouthpiece, and smaller accessories separately for a more thorough reset.
Step 2: Clean the Bowl and Downstem Separately
Put your bowl and downstem into separate baggies with your cleaning solution of choice.
Ziplock bags work, but reusable & sealable food storage bags work even better!
If your cleaner does not already contain an abrasive (like 420 Formula does), add coarse salt to the bag. Seal the baggies, shake gently, and let the smaller parts sit while you clean the rest of your piece.
Step 3: Fill the Base With Cleaning Solution
Pour your cleaning solution into the base. If you are using isopropyl alcohol or another cleaner without an abrasive, add coarse salt to help scrub the inside as you shake.
The salt/abrasive helps loosen buildup from the glass, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
Step 4: Attach Prism Cleaning Caps
Use Prism cleaning caps to seal the openings on your base, mouthpiece, or percolator. This keeps the cleaner inside the piece and makes shaking way less messy.
Make sure the caps are secure before you start shaking.
Step 5: SHAKE!
Once the caps are attached, shake the piece to loosen residue and buildup. Start gently, then shake more if needed.
The goal is to let the cleaner and salt move through the glass without knocking the piece against your sink, counter, or another glass part.
Don’t forget to shake the baggies with your bowl and downstem, too.
* Notes on Percolators *
Percolators can be cleaned separately once they’re detached from the rest of your Prism setup. Apply Prism Cleaning Caps to both ends of the percolator, pour your cleaning solution inside, and shake carefully to help loosen buildup.
If the perc is small enough, or if you have a large enough baggie, you can also place the whole percolator in a bag with cleaning solution and shake it that way.
Percolators may need a little more time and attention than other parts. Because of the tiny holes, slits, and internal channels, buildup can be harder to reach with a brush or by hand. Let the perc sit and soak if needed, then give it a solid hot water rinse after cleaning. Make sure water flows through all the openings so any loosened bits are flushed out and no cleaner is left behind.
Step 6: Detail Clean
After shaking, remove the cleaning caps, pour out the dirty liquid, and check for any spots that need extra attention.
Q-tips, brushes, pipe cleaners, and ISO wipes are your best friends for cleaning joints, tight corners, bowl openings, downstems, and areas around the Halo connection.
Avoid using anything sharp or abrasive that could scratch the glass or damage decals.
Step 7: Rinse and Rescrew
Rinse every piece thoroughly with warm water until all cleaning solution is gone.
This step matters — leftover cleaner can affect the taste of your next session.
Let everything dry, then screw your Prism piece back together, add fresh water, and enjoy the clean pull.

The easiest way to clean a bong is to keep it from getting too nasty in the first place. A few simple add-ons and habits can help cut down on buildup, make deep cleans faster, and keep your setup fresher between sessions!
An ash catcher is one of the best add-ons for keeping the rest of your piece cleaner longer. Just remember: the ash catcher is doing the dirty work, so you still have to clean the ash catcher itself.

Q: Can I Put Decaled Prism Pieces in the Dishwasher?
A: No — we do not recommend putting decaled Prism glass in the dishwasher. To protect the artwork, keep cleaning solution mostly inside the piece and clean the outside gently with mild soap, water, or a natural glass cleaner. Avoid soaking the outside decal, scrubbing the artwork, or using harsh chemicals directly on the design.
Q: How Should I Clean Prism Halos and Gaskets?
A: Remove your Halo connector and silicone gasket before deep cleaning. Wash them gently by hand with mild soap and warm water, then dry them fully before reassembling. We do not recommend putting Halos in the dishwasher, since high heat and strong detergent may affect the finish over time.
Q: Can I use boiling water to clean my bong?
A: Use warm or hot tap water, not boiling water, because sudden extreme temperature changes can stress glass.
Q: Can I use vinegar or lemon juice to clean hard water stains?
A: A mild vinegar soak may help with mineral/cloudy water spots, but rinse thoroughly after.
Q: Can I mix cleaning products?
