Importance of Changing your Bong Water 💦
Unlike all the other smoking methods, bongs give us the chance to use all the natural elements -- earth (the cannabis), fire (the lighter), air (the smoke), and last but not least, WATER!!! We all do our best to smoke the highest quality strains we can get our hands on, so why should we spoil the taste of that absolute gas with dirty water? Well the answer is, we shouldn't and we don't have too.
Go longer between water changes by cleaning regularly!
What’s Wrong With Dirty Water???
In dirty or stagnant water, all sorts of bacteria are able to form, and it doesn’t take long. In fact, stagnant water can start to accrue bacteria in just 24 - 48 hours . . .
Yup, only 24-48 hours and some of us leave our water in that bad boi for A LOT longer. Like a hell of a lot longer. We've all seen those nasty ass bongs with resin crusted on the sides so thick its like the Rocky Mountains in there amongst black water. That doesn't taste good so we know it can't be good for us. So why are we doing it? Hmmm good question. Maybe this will be some motivation for you to change your ways. E. Coli and Hepatitis A are common in stagnant water after 24-48 hours. That's just stagnate water. Like your water glass next to your bed that's been there for 2 days. Ok, so what's growing in that black Rocky Mountain beaker of yours? WHO THE F* KNOWS. But its definitely not your friendly molds and fungi. Something that's going to give you a pulmonary infection that's for sure!
On top of stagnate water being an issue for your health, did you know cannabis can pass along ASPERGILLUS as well. Its a fungus that grows on the plant itself and when its burned, it breaks down into mycotoxins. Mycotoxins cause lung disease. So again, lets stay healthy and keep that water clean. Even if it looks "clean" remember 24-48 hours and you're growing some bad boi's in there.
But Changing My Water Is SO Complicated!!!
I know what you’re thinking. With a lot of elaborate setups, changing the water can be an annoying task. If you have an especially big bong, you may not even be able to pour it out into the sink or tub without making a mess on your counter. Or maybe your faucet isn’t tall enough to reach the spot where you need to fill it up. If your bong has a percolator, the water can get stuck in one of the many chambers, causing you to flip this tall bong upside down a hundred times in your little kitchen or bathroom sink. All of this extra moving around makes your beloved glass more susceptible to being dropped and/or broken.
Side note, this is how we got the idea for Prism. We broke WAY too many beloved bongs in the bathroom while cleaning them. They were sad days. 😔
The Science of a Clean Hit: Hygiene & Filtration
If you want to truly appreciate your flower, you have to treat your glass like a kitchen utensil—not a piece of furniture.
A common question is how often you should change the water in a pipe to prevent biofilm or mold, and the answer is more frequent than most think.
Every 24 to 48 hours.
Biofilm—that slimy layer of bacteria—can begin to colonize almost immediately in stagnant water, turning your bong into a petri dish.
Beyond just the water, we have to talk about "the rotation." Are there any health risks associated with sharing glass pipes?
Absolutely.
Sharing mouthpieces can pass along everything from the common cold to more serious respiratory infections. If you’re the designated host, you can easily host a "Hygiene-First" smoking session using personal mouthpieces. It allows everyone to enjoy the same piece without swapping saliva, keeping the vibes high and the germs low.
There’s also a long-standing debate: does water filtration actually improve the smoking experience?
The answer is a resounding yes.
Water acts as a cooling agent and a particulate filter, trapping heavier ash and tar before they reach your lungs. A common concern for flavor-chasers is whether water filtration removes terpenes or flavor from vapor or smoke.
While water is excellent at filtering out water-soluble ash and debris, terpenes are oils and are not water-soluble. This means you get all the flavor of that "absolute gas" without the harsh, throat-burning heat.
Prism To The Rescue!!!
In addition to reducing the time and effort it takes to change your water, Prism’s interchangeable design reduces the chances of breakage during maintenance. When changing the water in a modular bong, you can leave the entire mouthpiece off to the side, eliminating the awkward swinging around of an entire piece, just to change the water.
All of our bases have easy access to adding or removing water, whether you have a honeycomb or a beaker. And if some water got trapped up in your percolator, no problem! Just take the percolator out by itself and pour it out, again, removing the need to handle an entire setup for a task that involves only one of its parts.
Also, want that filtered fridge water, we got you. Just put your base right up to your fridge water spout and BAM, fill that puppy up with some nice chilled clean ass filtered water.
Modular Duuudeee
There are so many perks (see what I did there?) to a modular bong, but the efficiency of changing the water is a game changer. If you’re someone who’s used to taking dirty bong rips (no judgment), get your hands on your favorite Prism Water Pipes setup and you will hardly even have to think about changing the water. That’s how easy we make it for you. And you won’t regret it after your first rip with fresh, clean water! Your body will thank you too!
