How to cough less when smoking a bong 😮‍💨

You may have heard one or several smokers in your life tell you coughing when smoking actually gets you higher. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is simply not true. . .

In fact, the act of coughing only deprives your brain of oxygen. This will give you the sensation of being “high,” but it is not the cannabis doing the job. This high is extremely temporary as well as relatively unhealthy. However, this is actually not bad news. It only means it’s perfectly possible for you to get the same nice high without destroying your lungs and throat.

Here are a couple things to keep in mind when smoking to avoid coughing while still getting the high you’re looking for.

Take Smaller Hits

Yes, we said it, take smaller hits. There's no need to try to impress others in the room and ignore the bullies. Just do you and take what your body is telling you it wants. We don't all have a pair of big ole lungs. Some of us have little baby ones. 👶

Add Some Filtration

Literally the best thing you can do is add a lil extra filtration. Now this either means buying a bong with some form of filtration already in it OR adding some percolators and/or a Percolated Beaker Base to your Prism custom bong setup.

When your bong has some form of filtration in it, you get more water chambers that allow the smoke to pass through increasing the smoke to water ratio making a overall smoother hit. There are A LOT of different types of percolators to choose from, but most of them do the same thing. At Prism, we have large and small tree percolators, and large and small showerhead percolators. In our opinion, their pull and filtration is the same, but its always fun to swap out each one if you have both. Be Choosy on What you Smoke

The next time you are down at your local dispensary, ask the budtender about the cultivation process. For example, it is useful to know how the weed is stored and how long it has been sitting around. Any mold or mildew will ruin your experience. It’s a bit like eating stale food. Don't get me wrong, stale pretzels are great, but not our weed.

You should also inquire as to whether there are any pesticides or herbicides in the weed. Furthermore, poorly dried or cured cannabis, or low-grade schwag, will produce a much harsher smoke with coughing fits almost inevitability.

Grind it Well Baby

Do yourself a favor and invest in a top-notch 3 or 4-chamber grinder. Quality grinders provide you with evenly-ground, fine weed that allows for a smooth burning bowl. It only takes one ‘hot-spot’ in your weed to F it all up.

Drink a lil Agua 💦

Even if you follow all of the tips above, there is still a chance your lungs will become irritated and cause you to cough. Keep a glass of water beside you and drink from it before, during, and after your smoking session. If your throat is already irritated, it won’t take much to cause a coughing fit.

Experienced users may also elect to suck on hard candy or chew gum to increase the production of saliva. Staying hydrated also helps limit the impact of symptoms if you happen to consume too much smoke and begin to cough.

Know Your Bong

If you’re smoking a new bong, you will want to start with a small hit, no matter how much experience you have. One of the most common mistakes that result in even the most experienced smokers hacking up a lung is underestimating a new bong. Taking a small, short hit will allow you to get familiar with the piece, how it pulls, and what to expect for your next hit. Even if you are smoking a piece you are familiar with, it’s not a bad idea to take smaller hits. This may seem counterintuitive to getting the maximum high, but if you breathe correctly, you can maximize the amount of THC you receive without concentrating the smoke in your throat.

Its all About the Breathing

Remember to breathe deeply and softly. Attempting that slow breath and deep inhale will reduce instances of coughing. This also helps the hesitancy that can occur when inhaling that causes smoke to get stuck in the throat resulting in coughing.
